Depending on your location and the season you may want to “close” up your house. For most of us that means doing the obvious such as closing windows, closing doors and then turning on and adjusting the furnace, heat pump or air conditioner.
Depending upon the design and construction details of your home how much the above actually “closes” your living space is worth discussing. Some people have noticed unwanted air flow around doors and windows. As a result, they may opt to add caulking and other materials to slow down or stop that unwanted air flow.
For many homeowners this is mostly an effort to help save energy but also it obviously can have a beneficial impact on comfort. The one thing that typically escapes our thought process is the consideration of how this also impacts the air quality in our space.
According to this informative article at Healthline millions of people suffer from hay fever and other airborne allergies. Also, hay fever effects a greater percentage of children than adults. These statistics clearly indicate that there is a lot of suffering going on as a result of allergic reactions.
If you, your children or anyone living in your house suffers from hay fever symptoms you know firsthand how miserable this is. To make matters worse, many of the available treatments come with a host of undesirable side effects.
The question then is since we have closed all the windows and doors and turned on the HVAC system to filter the air why is it that we are still experiencing all these allergy symptoms? In simplest terms it’s because our home has many cracks, crevices and other imperfections that allow outside air in.
This in turn leads us to the topic of this writing and that is using spray foam to improve air quality. While other insulation options such as blown in insulation and fiberglass insulation may offer reasonable R values they do not “seal” the exterior perimeter of the structure.
Due to the characteristics of spray foam, when properly installed it can create an impenetrable seal for your home. By design it sprays on as a liquid and then quickly expands in a fashion that allows it to fully fill every nook, cranny and gap on your attic or wall.
Perhaps the single most desirable benefit of using spray foam insulation is that it is the only insulation option that can literally make a dramatic improvement in the quality of the air that you and your family breathe in your dwelling space.
Not only can this cut down on needless suffering, but it can provide other worthwhile benefits like better sleeping patterns, cost savings on allergy medicines, eliminated trips to the doctor, pharmacy and store. In short let’s just say all these benefits combine to give you an improved quality of life.
